The Belvedere Palace houses the Österreichische Galerie and was holding a special exhibition of Gustav Klimt's landscapes
The Upper and Lower palaces are separated by the beautiful gardens, including topiary work and fountains (in Summer). There are a number of sphinxes and crows proudly guarding the area.

Stadtpark
with the famous Strauß statue

The Freyung square behind the Café Central, holds the oldest Viennese Christmas Market, selling candles, scents, wooden toys, decorations, cribs, and candyfloss, not to forget Glühwein and Punsch.

Also in the Freyung square is this fine Jugendstil building

The Burgtheater, opposite the Rathaus, had a facelift during the summer, and the busts of Shakespeare, Goethe, Schiller, Mollière, and others look proudly down onto the Dr. Karl-Lueger-Ring.

Busy shoppers in the Mariahilferstraße
(Vienna's Oxford Street)

Day 3 Four gasometers (the first in Europe) have been turned into linked offices, houses, and a shopping centre. The U3 line has also been extended so they have their own undergound station.

The Museumsquartier is the new area behind the more traditional Natural History and Art History museums. Two notable new buildings are the Museum of Modern Art, and the privately owned Leopold Museum which contains many turn of the century works from the Wiener Werkstätte e.g Schiele, Klimt, Kokoschka, and Hoffman.

In front of the Rathaus and best visited in the evening when it's been snowing, the Christmas market atmosphere is at its most expectant. This year the Rathaus windows were used as a giant Advent calendar.

Freunde

Day 4 A Sunday morning walk
in the Burggarten...

...leads to breakfast in the wonderfully renovated Palmenhaus restaurant...

...where you can meet old and new friends.

A magical afternoon in Baden drinking Punsch and listening to the band in the Hauptplatz...

Day 4 Kohlmarkt

Wiener Neustadt

And finally...
How's this for cheek, emblazoned on the side of the Südbahnhof:

"Goodbye Vienna,
the nicest suburb of Graz."

Graz may be the cultural capital of Europe in 2003, but in the end nothing beats Vienna!
