Secession

Friedrichstrasse 12

At the beginning of the Naschmarkt diagonally opposite the Karlskirche. Just look out for the characteristic "golden cabbage" on the top!

This Jugendstil gallery and exhibition building was built by Joseph Olbrich 1897-98 for the 'Secession' group of artists. It houses Gustav Klimt's Beethoven frieze in the basement and is used by modern artists for experimental and unusual exhibitions. One artist even painted the whole outside of the building red a few years ago!

The building bears the Secession group's motto:

Die Zeit ihre Kunst;
der Kunst ihre Freiheit

To time its art;
to art its freedom

and the Latin words Ver Sacrum
(Sacred Spring)

There are many decorative features all around the building.
