Hofburg

Approach from the Michaelerplatz at the end of the Kohlmarkt, or through the Heldentor on the Ring, opposite the Museums.

Right: Michaelertor entrance (1893)

The Hofburg is a large complex of buildings including the former Imperial apartments, various museums, a chapel, a church, and the National Library. Each Kaiser left his mark on the Hofburg adding buildings and statues over the centuries. The original Schweizerhof courtyard was built as a fortress in 1275.

Below left: Neue Burg (1881-1913), right: Burgtor (1821-24), both on the Heldenplatz.

The Michaelerkirche opposite the Michaelertor is the former Imperial court church. The oldest part dates from the 13th century, but it was renovated in neo-classical style in 1792.

Above the entrance the Archangel Michael is shown defeating Lucifer.

Doorway in the Josefsplatz, opposite the National Library.

This is where Harry Lime (Orson Wells) had his apartment in The Third Man.

Below Holly Martins (Joeph Cotten) has just come through the archway from the Michaelerplatz and is approaching the doorway.
