The first coffee houses opened in Vienna in 1683 after the Turkish siege. By the late 19th century they had become lively meeting places for artists, authors, poets, composers, doctors, officials, and political groups.

The better coffee houses will give you a glass of tap water with your coffee to cleanse your palate.

These are some of the combinations available - not every Kaffeehaus serves all of them or agrees on the ingredients - check the menu (and the price as some can be expensive!)

Schlagobers
'Mit Schlag'. Add whipped cream on top of your coffee - talk about gilding the lily!
Wiener Melange
Coffee with hot milk and a foamy top. My favourite!
Türkischer
Very strong Turkish coffee, often very sweet, served in a long-handled pot.
Mokka
Strong black coffee.
Einspänner
Mokka coffee served in a glass with whipped cream.
Kleiner/großer Brauner
Small / large coffee with milk or cream.
Verlängerter
Black coffee diluted with water.
Fiaker
Verlängerter with rum or brandy and whipped cream.
Kaisermelange
(Emperor's melange)
An egg yolk, honey and a shot of brandy added to black coffee.
Maria Theresia
Black coffee with orange liqueur and whipped cream.
Franziskaner
Melange with whipped cream and chocolate flakes.
Schale Gold
(Cup of gold)
Small black coffee mixed with cream, golden brown in color.
Apologies that the pictures above all show a melange - next time I'm in Vienna
I guess I'll have to order each one in order to photograph it. Mmmm!
